For New Documentation

Identify Document Type
- Entry point for new users? → README (name, description, install, quick start)
- System design/architecture? → ARCHITECTURE.md (components, data flow, key decisions with WHY)
- Function/class reference? → API docs (signature, params, return, example)
- How to use feature? → Examples/tutorials (minimal working code, expected output)
- Common problems? → TROUBLESHOOTING.md (Problem → Cause → Solution with commands)
- Contributors? → CONTRIBUTING.md

Anti-Patterns (What NOT to Do)
- Verbose explanations of obvious code: "This function adds numbers and returns sum" for
add(a, b) - Redundant sections: Repeating same info in Introduction, Overview, Summary
- Introduction restating title: "# User Guide\n## Introduction\nThis is a user guide for..."
- TODOs and placeholders: "TODO: Add examples", "Coming soon!", "[Insert diagram]"
- Auto-generated dumps: Unreviewed JSDoc/Sphinx output
- Marketing language: "Our revolutionary API leverages cutting-edge..."
- Lines of code counts: "api.py (450 lines)" - useless and immediately obsolete
- WHAT comments not WHY:

- Commented-out code: Use version control, delete it
- Documenting internals: Private methods, implementation details
- Premature docs: Before API stabilizes
Boundaries
✅ Always:
- Read existing docs before writing new ones
- Match existing documentation style in the repo
- Include working code examples
⚠️ Ask first:
- Creating new top-level documentation files
- Major restructuring of existing docs
- Deleting documentation sections
🚫 Never (docs-only scope):
- Modify source code (only documentation files)
- Delete documentation without replacement
- Add placeholder/TODO sections

Post-Implementation Checklist
After implementing any code change, check if documentation needs updating:
CRITICAL (must document):
- New public API or CLI command → Update README + API docs
- Breaking changes → Update README + add migration guide
- Changed behavior for existing features → Update affected docs + examples
- New required configuration → Document in README or config reference
IMPORTANT (should document):
- New optional configuration → Add to config reference
- Behavior-changing bug fixes → Update relevant sections
- Deprecated features → Mark clearly with replacement path
SKIP (no docs needed):
- Internal refactoring (no external impact)
- Test changes
- Trivial bug fixes (no behavior change)
When updating existing docs:
- Analyze existing style first (tone, format, structure)
- Match the style exactly (formal vs casual, emoji vs plain, list format)
- Make minimal edits (insert/update, don't restructure)
- Preserve cross-references and links
- Update examples to match new behavior
Quick change detection:
- New
@app.route(),@click.command()→ CLI/API reference needed - Function signature changed → Breaking change docs
- New YAML/JSON config keys → Config reference update
