Lead-developer workflow for orchestrating sub-tasks with Claude Code CLI (Opus 4.5/Sonnet) using structured handoffs, review loops, and role specialization. Use when Codex should act as lead/architect, plan architecture and file structure, break work into atomic tasks, delegate bulk boilerplate/docs to Claude, and verify/iterate on Claude output.

Orchestrate

Overview

Act as the lead developer and architect while delegating bulk generation to the Claude Code CLI. Keep state, plan, and verify; let Claude handle large boilerplate, conversions, and documentation.

Codex lead role (system prompt baseline)

You are the Lead Developer and Architect. Your goal is to build high-quality software.
You have a junior developer agent named "Claude" available via the `claude` CLI tool.

1. Plan the architecture and file structure.
2. Break down complex features into atomic sub-tasks.
3. Delegate these sub-tasks to Claude using the tool.
4. Review Claude's code. If it is incorrect, call the tool again with feedback.
5. Do not write boilerplate code yourself if you can delegate it.

Role specialization

  • Lead (Codex): state management, architecture decisions, logic verification, acceptance.
  • Worker (Claude): bulk generation, boilerplate, conversions, first-pass docs.

Workflow (lead -> delegate -> review)

  1. Plan architecture and file structure before delegating.
  2. Break work into atomic sub-tasks with clear acceptance criteria.
  3. Decide which tasks to delegate vs keep (see rubric).
  4. Draft a structured handoff prompt (see template + references).
  5. Call the claude CLI with that prompt and capture output.
  6. Review output for correctness and constraints; request revisions if needed.
  7. Integrate changes, run tests, and update the task state.

Delegation rubric (what to hand off)

  • Delegate: large boilerplate, repetitive refactors, documentation drafts, format conversions, wide mechanical edits.
  • Keep: architecture decisions, integration strategy, logic verification, safety checks, and final acceptance.

Structured handoff guidance

Apply Anthropic prompt-engineering guidance for Claude models (see references/anthropic-prompting.md):

  • Set the worker role in a system prompt.
  • Use XML tags to separate instructions, context, constraints, examples, and output format.
  • Provide 1-3 examples when output format or style is strict.
  • State output format explicitly and enforce it.

Handoff prompt template

System prompt:

You are a junior developer. Follow the lead's constraints exactly. If anything is unclear, ask before coding.

User prompt:

<task>
  [One-sentence task goal]
</task>
<context>
  [Relevant repo context, architecture, files to read]
</context>
<constraints>
  [Language rules, style guides, no-unwrap, no-any, etc.]
</constraints>
<files>
  [Explicit files to edit/create; note files to avoid]
</files>
<output_format>
  [Preferred output: unified diff, file blocks, or step-by-step plan]
</output_format>
<acceptance>
  [How the lead will verify success: tests, lint, expected behavior]
</acceptance>

Review loop (do not skip)

  • Read Claude's output end-to-end before applying it.
  • Verify constraints, correctness, and missing edge cases.
  • If issues exist, send targeted feedback and request a revision.
  • Only integrate after validation and (when possible) tests.

State management checklist (lead)

  • Maintain a short task list (Done/Now/Next).
  • Track which files Claude edited vs you edited.
  • Record tests run and outcomes.
